A very imposing silver plated pedestal bowl, with a pierced rim.
This was made by James Dixon and Sons in Sheffield, in about 1880. The marks read JD&S, EP (electroplate) and the pattern number Y3318. On the opposite side, the is the number '10' and a symbol in a shield - maybe a 'W" - but this is rather worn and difficult to read. On the base, there are hand etched marks 'm', 'uv/B 375' and '950/p', which are likely to reference the order specific silversmiths that made this.
There is significant wear to the silver plate, showing how it has been well used and loved over the last 140 years. We believe that adds real character and charm. It's a very handsome piece, which would make a wonderful fruit bowl or cake basket. It's a high quality piece that totally stand the test of time.

"Have nothing in your houses you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful"
William Morris
At Know to be Beautiful, we believe that beautiful things warm the heart and make a house a home. And the world is full of beautiful things!
Over the decades artists and craftsmen have used our limited natural resources to make wonderful items. Once something has been loved and used it often makes it more beautiful, so, rather than always making new things, we like finding a new home for something that has already been made.
