Product code: Vintage Watermans Fountain Pen & Pencil Set with 14K order Gold Nib And Gold Filled Cap

Waterman C/F restored vintage fountain pen and pencil set, gold filled cap, gold section overlay, solid 14K gold nib, in box with papers. 1950s.

The Waterman C/F was the first really successful cartridge pen, introduced in 1953, but made into the 1980s. It was made in a variety of colors and models. The plainest have steel nibs and caps; others with gold-filled caps, gold section overlays, and solid gold nibs; and yet others with gold-filled or silver barrels and caps and order solid gold nibs. Waterman pens were no longer produced in the US after 1958, shortly after the C/F was introduced, so US-made C/Fs are among the earliest made, and rarer than those made by Waterman France.

This set was the top of the line for the early US-made C/F—gold caps, solid gold nib, gold section inset. In the mid-'50s, the set sold for $24.75!

The C/F was designed by Harley Earl, and the colors and shapes show affinities with his automotive design work in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Look at this pen next to a two-tone Chevrolet Bel Air you can see the aesthetic continuity.

These take cartridges and converters that are no longer in production, and they will not fit currently available standard cartridges. Converters can be found. Refills for the ballpoint are also no longer in production. Pentooling (US) and Custom Pen Parts (UK) make reproductions of them.

This set is in good, used condition. The pencil and pen shows wear. Lines and imprints on the caps are sharp, and there is no brassing on the caps or furniture. The ballpoint mechanism turns smoothly. The pen section is damaged with some cracking on the back of the feed, which is common is a used pen of this age. C/Fs with inlays often corrode around the nib—there's none of that here. The nib is shiny and smooth in appearance, and an excellect smooth writer with a width on the extra-fine end of fine.
