From Independence, Missouri, the boys trek overland with a wagon train to the Willamette Valley in Oregon Country. With their families, the boys make the difficult two thousand mile, three month journey, crossing desert, mountain order passes, and wild rivers, encountering hostile Indians and, with courage and good nature, face death and disease along the way.
Brother Ernest Ryan (1897-1963), C.S.C., was a prolific author of juvenile literature. He founded the Dujarie Press at Notre Dame in 1945. Boys of the Covered Wagons was published while he was teaching at the University of Portland in Oregon. He was born John Dominic Ryan in Elyria, Ohio, and took his vows as a Brother of the Holy Cross in 1920.
