Ralph Waldo Emerson the most widely known man of letters in his lifetime.
Ralph Waldo Emerson, the most widely known man of letters in his lifetime (1803-1882) in America, established himself as a prolific poet, essayist, popular lecturer, philosopher, and an advocate of social reforms. Some of his most remembered quotes -- "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divine" - "Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year." - "Trust thyself: every heart vibrates to that iron string".
I am offering for sale his biography written by Elisabeth Luther Cary, a work purported to have been "selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it." It contains 10 full page illustrations taken from engravings, photographs and original drawings. They feature Emerson himself, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry D. Thoreau, and others.
The 1904 leather bound collectors edition is elegant. It is in FINE CONDITION AND MAY NEVER HAVE BEEN READ! The 283 page, 9 3/4 x 6 1/2" volume was published by G P Putnam's Sons The Knickerbocker Press. It was printed on heavy paper and each of the illustrations are protected by a clear glossy order paper insert. There is a simple, textured leather cover, with 5 raised bands on its spine, and gold lettering. The leather and gold trim continues into the inside cover a bit finished by what seems like heavy plaid fabric. The cover of the 115+ year old book shows shelf wear principally around the corners and edges (please see pictures) Outside the pages are a little dusty; inside they clean; the pictures crisp.
Thanks for considering it.
