Information about the painter:
Hermann Vinzenz Heller (August 22, 1866 in Vienna-Hietzing † June 8, 1949 in Schleppenhof near Klagenfurt) was an Austrian painter, sculptor and physician as well as teacher at the Imperial and Royal School of Applied Arts of the Imperial and Royal Austrian Museum of Art and Industry (Museum of Applied Arts), at the Technical University of Vienna (Vienna University of Applied Arts) and at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts.
Life
Hermann Heller was born in Hietzing as the son of the lawyer Joseph V. Heller and received private lessons in drawing at an early age. After graduating from the humanistic Mariahilfer Gymnasium in 1888 order, he began studying painting at the Academy of Fine Arts, as well as studying medicine at the University of Vienna. In 1895 he successfully completed both studies. Afterwards he worked as a corvette doctor. In 1900, a research fellowship took him to Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, London, Bern and Basel. In 1903 Heller habilitated at the Technical University in Vienna for the "Doctrine of the Construction of the Human Form" and followed a further study of sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts. After completing his third degree, he worked as a teacher at the three Viennese universities (see above) from 1906 to 1918, sometimes with interruptions from travel or missions as a naval doctor. In 1913 he married his pupil Vilma Grömmer. In 1913/19 he published the proportional tables of the human form (Verlag Anton Schroll, Vienna). In 1928 Heller was appointed Full Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. In 1932 he became a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus. In 1935 he was awarded the title of Full University Professor by the Technical University.
Heller's oeuvre includes more than 500 oil paintings, portrait, landscape and nude drawings, portrait busts, bronzes and graphics. Works can be found both in Viennese museums (Kunsthistorisches Museum, Albertina, Museum für angewandte Kunst, Wien Museum, Kunstsammlung der Universität für angewandte Kunst) as well as in museums of the federal states, abroad and in private collections.
