This is the best example of a very uncommon Spofford patent non-ratchet bit brace I have ever had. It has what is called a split frame chuck that is tightened with a large thumbscrew. It has the capability of holding any of the tapered, square shank auger bits that are available.
The wimble braces were available in both 10 in. & 12 in. versions. This is the first of the 10 in. size that I have had…or even seen. The 12 in. version is more frequently seen. Most are marked 12W, I would think this would be marked 10W but surprisingly the only mark is the "John S. Fray & Co." stamp.
This example is in excellent condition. The wood is very good, the metal is good and it has much of the original nickel plating. The only apology is that both the handles are tight. They move but not as freely as I like.
If you are a fan of the Spofford braces, you will notice that the 2 piece wrist handle with the pewter rings has been replaced with a one piece handle. This was made possible by making the frame in 2 pieces. You can see how this was done by looking closely at the patent drawing. You can also see the pin that secures the two pieces in the 4th picture.
A nice solid order user, or add it to your collection.
