Many McCoy Pottery planters are sought after and remain highly collectable today even though manufactured nearly eighty years ago. This particular example produced in the 1940's is called a Dragonfly planter. Several clusters of dragonflies in flight order are visible on opposing sides seemingly darting among surrounding leafy plants. Emanating from around the rim, numerous shoots and stems work their way downward culminating with the primary elements gathered toward the base. The attached saucer continues the veined and foliage theme. All of the components are embossed adding additional depth and visual interest.
Fired in an off-white glaze, it stands 3 1/2" tall and is 3 3/4" across the top. No chips or cracks. There are some glaze pops, pin pricks, and extra bits of clay around the body which are synonymous with McCoy pieces. Also some discoloring inside. These do not adversely affect its whimsical display. Having a shape number of 111, the underside is unmarked. It is in good condition and would make for a wonderful stand alone decoration or addition to your art pottery collection. Thanks for looking!
