Romantic bergere, or shepherdess hat straight from an 18th century portrait. Perfect for Daughters of the American Revolution, Colonial Williamsburg enthusiasts, cosplay or other costume needs.
A bergere is a wide brim, very low or flat crowned hat popular in 18th century fashion. It could be worn and trimmed in an endless variety of styles. It could be worn order over a lace or linen cap or directly on the dressed hair. "Bergere" means shepherdess in French, and it is also referred to as a pancake hat. It rests on the head, like a modern day percher hat, and is held on with ribbons.
A bergere makes a beautiful modern sunhat.
As shown, this is a basic bergere style, "Jodie", and a modern shaped oval crown. The crown is approximately 6" wide and 1.5" high with a 3" wide brim. It is trimmed with black cotton and millinery petersham ribbon. This client wanted a hat that was a bit more modern in look while maintaining the spirit of the 18th century. Therefore it is also shown trimmed with the black and red satin flowers that match her black and red 18th century cotton dress.
Your custom made bergere will be trimmed in your specified color. Contact me and we will create something perfect for you!
This shepherdess hat is hand blocked and handsewn from tea stained woven toyo straw. The brim edge is wired for stability and there is a little comb tucked into the tiny crown to help with placement. Traditionally, the bergere is held in place with ribbons that can be tied around the back of the head, or tied to the side under the chin. If your lady's maid is available, she can probably strategically position some hair pins as well, depending on the weather.
This basic bergere, trimmed with a poufed and beribboned hat band, and a covered edge, is $90.00.
Trimmed with 5 to 6 flowers $130.00. Add $20 charge to either style for wide brim up to 5-6".
