This is a magnificent Scottish kilt pin artisan crafted in Glasgow, Scotland by Henderson & Horner Bros. It was crafted in 1954 as indicated by the silver hallmarks.
It is a solid weighty design crafted to be worn by a man on a Fly Plaid or by a woman as a clasp for a cloak or pinned to an Irish wool sweater. It is a stunning Celtic-Norse design which pays homage to the Viking people who invaded the English Isles and stayed for about 300 years.
In fact, Northern Scotland, was, at one time, a Norse domain and the Northern Isles experienced the most long-lasting Norse influence. Almost half of the people on Shetland today have Viking ancestry, and around 30% of Orkney residents.
The design is rich in cultural symbolism. At the center is a Viking long ship which was used in the Middle Ages for war and raiding. It is framed by both Celtic and Norse symbols. There is a definitive Celtic ebb and flow of knot work with a Triquetra or Trinity knot placed on both sides sides of the Sea Orm. This creature can be found at the north, south, east and west of the design. The Sea Orm was a Norse mythological creature who lived in the North Sea toppling ships to eat the men as they fell into the water. The orm is entwined within the flow of the endless knots and accents four Viking shields. These elements are highlighted buy a rich patina.
Overall, the composition has a strong medieval countenance with a beautiful ancient feel. Stunning…
