Original Oil Painting Portrait of a young Boy

Sven Joann Sven Joann (1908-1985)

During his studies at Stockholm Academy of the Arts, Sven Joann's painting was developed under the direction of more established artists such as Emil Johanson-Thor, Sallberg, Hjortzberg, Otte Sköld, Wilhelm Smith and Albert Engström.

By Wilhelmson, Joann received a solid foundation, where the factual drawing with strict details was a guiding light. With Smith, he learned a freer approach to painting where the color color and a softness in the brushwork came first. Both of these teachers came to characterize Joann's art in a tangible way, which he himself has emphasized.

The exhibitions took turns
Study trips to Germany and Italy gave Joann the opportunity to start a more independent creation, mainly with watercolors and drawings. In 1932 he was ready for his first solo exhibition, which took place in Svartbrödraklostret in Lund. Some canvases were sold and Skånska Dagbladet wrote: The artist had a youthful desire to experiment with real inspiration at the bottom, thus a rather benevolent reception. At the next solo exhibition in Västerås in 1934, the critics called for a uniform style or line, but were still quite positive about Joann's art.

As an exhibitor, Joann was often asked, mainly for solo exhibitions, but also for group exhibitions. Sven Joann's art is therefore represented in most museums in southern Sweden, but above all in private collections.

Lyrical realism close to nature
In an interview in Växjöbladet in 1946, Joann is asked which is his line. His answer feels completely relevant when looking today at the works left behind: For me, it can not be a question of one track but several. Demanding the unified style of an artist is a chore. I do not realize that you have to paint either just sea, only horses or specialize at all. The personality has nothing to do with the choice of motif. Sometimes you want to paint with thick color and sometimes with thin, and then the style becomes different… Sometimes it is landscape motifs that attract, sometimes a character study and other times a flower study, which I prefer to do with…

He is also asked if surrealism has attracted. No, I have always been a stranger to paraphrases of reality, whether it be surrealism or decorative expressionism. In my opinion, all art should be based on nature observations.

Landscape painting has remained Sven's strong point over the years. Here light, days and atmosphere change and you can sometimes see that he returns to the same motif again and again to capture it at different times and seasons. A glitter of water, the rough surface of a cliff, the varied greenery of a tree or a peaceful cow resting on a meadow - a landscape painting in Nordic tradition that appeals to the eye and the soul. This was a line that came to characterize Joann's art throughout his life's work. The depiction of nature in its various forms, as well as urban environments and fine-tuned portraits, remains a hallmark throughout his art.

Frequently hired portraitist
Sven enjoyed and respected other art forms and he admired its practitioners, regardless of expression. Sven contacted those he appreciated and was happy to portray them. Those who sat for Joann can tell that the moments were by no means slow, without many interesting questions being dealt with. Sven Joann has also written about these encounters with personalities in his memoirs. One of those portrayed was the composer Hugo Alfvén. Alfvén's music was something Sven often listened to. The pieces of music have a clear connection to Swedish folk tone. Perhaps that was one of the reasons why Joann was drawn to Alfvén's music, since Sven himself had an artistic platform in Swedish nature and the order soul of the people, a direction that was characterized by his earliest teachers.

Many long journeys
In 1932, the first trip abroad was to Florence and Rome. The trips were many and all over Europe. Joann captured the environments of the different countries, their light and moods. Italy was the most visited destination. Most of the motifs, however, came from Sven Joann from Öland, Gotland, Österlen and above all from Småland. In recent years, he portrayed the immediate surroundings of Gemla with a constantly evolving security and color.

Gemla Herrgård became the dream house
In Italy, Joann meets the artist Gunvor Kamke and in 1970 they are married at the Capitolium in Rome. Together with Gunvor's son in a previous marriage, the three of them moved to Alvesta Tingshus. In 1977, they found their dream house, which fulfilled all their innermost desires, Gemla Herrgård. It will be a fruit-bearing association for both, where they inspire each other in their work and they make several painting trips together.
