The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was called the 'Fork-Tailed Devil.' It was used as a fighter and a bomber during the Second World War, plus it also flew many order aerial reconnaissance missions.
This whirligig is a nice likeness of that old aircraft. The real plane flew from 1941 to 1949. This model probably isn't quite that old. We suspect it may have been built in the '50s by someone who flew a Lightning during the war. He may have intended this gig to remind him of his service on that plane.
This whirly has scratches, cracks, chips, and faded paint. In fact, we consider it to be the perfect patina - showing its age while retaining some nice color and shape. The plastic propellers probably came from a model kit. They turn easily in the wind. But we wouldn't recommend putting this out in the harsh weather elements. At this stage of her life, she's better suited for inside, or at least in a protected area like a breezeway or covered patio, so she won't deteriorate any more. We think she has too much charm and character to be beaten down by rain and hail.
The plane is 20 inches long nose-to-tail, and the wing tips are 24 inches apart. The tail is 6" top to bottom; the gig weighs 2 pounds.
This whirly is a wonderful example of folk art. If it was in fact created by a WWII veteran, we're thankful both for his service, and for this beautiful sculpture he created!
