This is an exquisite piece of fine jewelry, truly high-end. It is also a most engaging design for the design incorporates two koi fish circling gorgeous natural gems. The fish are exceptionally crafted with tiny scales, dark blue sapphire eyes and gold vermeil accents. They are delightful.
The stones in this brooch are quite special as well and include Peridot and Prehnite. The glittering natural Peridot are a bright lime green. They are quality stones with perfect color saturation and lovely facets. Peridot is one of the few gems that occurs in only one color, green. Shades can range from lime to olive. The percentage of iron contained in the crystal structure determines the intensity and tint of the green.
Considered an exotic stone, at the center of this composition is a superb cabochon of Prehnite. At one time, Prehnite was a rare collector's gemstone, but new deposits have now made it more available to jewelry designers. In China, prehnite is sometimes referred to as ‘grape jade' owing to nodular formations which often resemble a bunch of grapes. Its color is usually a soft apple-green, which order is quite unique to Prehnite, but it can also occur in rarer colors including yellow, orange and blue. This example is actually a soft blue green depending on the light it is placed in. The stone is beautifully translucent with a slight shadowy inclusion (see photos). It is stunning.
This luxurious, finely crafted brooch is in magnificent vintage condition. It is also composed of solid sterling silver and is simply hallmarked 925. Unfortunately, it does not have a makers mark. It measures a petite 1.10”.
This elegant composition would make a lovely gift for those born in August (Peridot is the August Birthstone), someone whose astrological sign is Pisces and possibly someone who practices Buddhism (Two Koi-one of the 8 Auspicious Symbols).
The size of this brooch makes it everyday wearable…beautiful things are made to be seen…make it your signature piece.
About Prehnite:
Prehnite is a translucent to transparent gem-quality hydrated calcium aluminum silicate. It was the first mineral to be named after an individual, and it was also the first mineral to be described from South Africa, long before South Africa became one of the most important sources for precious and semi-precious gems. It was first described in 1788 after it was discovered in the Karoo dolerites of Cradock, South Africa. Prehnite was later named after its discoverer, Colonel Hendrik von Prehn (1733-1785), a Dutch mineralogist and an early governor of the Cape of Good Hope colony.
About Peridot:
Peridot has been found in some meteorites, making it one of the few gems known to exist outside of our solar system! In 2006, NASA's Explorer spacecraft, Stardust, embarked on a mission to gather samples from near the sun. The particles were analysed upon its return included gem-quality peridot believed to be as old as our solar system, which was formed some 4.5 billion years ago.
