This fused glass casting features a koi fish that can be seen swimming below the surface of a pond. Lily pads with their pink flowers can be seen at differing levels throughout the casting to add depth to this handmade piece.
Created in 2018 in my Portland, Oregon studio, this one-of-a-kind casting was built in a glass box by using precisely cut lily pads, three dimensional glass flowers previously fired, and pre-cast koi, all layered in the box and covered with finely ground glass called frit.
The top surface of the glass is textured to give the appearance of rippling water.
The order art was then fired in a kiln to approximately 1400 degrees Fahrenheit for over 24 hours to create the piece shown. Two firings were done-one to create the flowers and the koi, and one to fire the filled casting box.
The finished piece was then trimmed and coldworked to create beveled edges.
Dimensions are approximately 6 inches wide by 5.5 inches high by 0.75 inches thick.
