Product code: Lavender Tanzanite order Stacker Ring (Genuine, Natural Tanzanite), 3mm x 0.10 Carat, Round Cut, 14K Gold Fill and Sterling Silver Stackable Ring

Here's another in my new range* of handmade minimalist style stacker rings, this one featuring a pale lavender tanzanite in sterling silver on 14 karat 'Gold Fill' band **.

The tanzanite is 3mm in diameter and weighs 0.10 carats. It was earth-mined under government license in Merelani, Tanzania and is 100% natural and untreated. It's a perfect little specimen, flawless internally and externally. The hue is the palest of lavenders or lilacs alive with tanzanite's famous scintillating sparkle.

The 1.2 gram band is made from 14 Karat Gold Fill, a round profile style, 1.5mm diameter and highly polished. The bezel holding the tanzanite is sterling silver. I think tanzanite works better with silver (or white gold) than coloured gold because of the gem's natural silvery sparkle. In a yellow or rose gold setting the metal colour shines through and muddies the tanzanites colour and luster. The silver setting I've used here measures 3.3mm wide x 3mm high. This leaves the top surface of the gem around 4mm above the top of the wearer's finger, making it a very 'low profile' design suitable for everyday wear.

Presentation for the ring includes a hinge-lid gift box lined with colour coordinated Japanese Unryu papers. Unryu is a handmade designer paper that contains strands of plant fiber for colour and contrast - very pretty. Dressing up my jewellery for display and gift-giving is one of my favourite parts of the Etsy process. If you'd like to see a photo of the style of presentation do please drop me a line and I'll be pleased to send you a photo!

** ... Gold-Fill was originally a metallurgy technique invented in the 19th century for the manufacture of hard-wearing pocket watch cases. It used to be called 'Rolled Gold'. The technique was revived in the late 20th century by precious metal manufacturers because it offered the same physical appearance and durability as solid gold for a fraction of its (skyrocketing) price.

Gold Fill is not the same as gold electroplate (or 'gold tone' as plating is sometimes called). With electroplating, gold ions in a cyanide solution are moved by electricity to lightly coat a base metal, typically copper, brass or sterling silver. With Gold Fill on the other hand, a thick layer - 5% by weight - of solid 14 karat gold is mechanically bonded to a base metal with heat. This layer is up to 20,000 times thicker than the mere ionic whisper of gold deposited by electrodeposition and looks, lasts, and tests (with an electronic tester) identical to solid 14 karat gold. Gold Fill jewellery is consequently VERY hard wearing. With everyday use it doesn't fade, flake or scratch off like gold electroplate, and is also completely safe for people with sensitive skins.

In the USA Gold Fill jewellery is regulated by the Federal Trade Commission because it looks identical to solid gold and can be passed off as such by shady gold dealers. You can tell genuine Gold Fill by its unique karat stamp : "1/20-14K" - which means, 1/20th (5%) of the items total weight is certified to be solid 14 karat gold.
