MacLaughlan first studied art in Boston under J. W. O. Hamilton. In 1898 he settled in Paris to complete his education at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. MacLaughlan soon established himself as a major international artist. In 1901 two of his etchings were accepted by the prestigious Salon de la Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts and in 1903 he was elected an Associate of the Salon.
