This is a wonderful mid century modern porcelain skier figurine designed by Jiří Černoch for Royal Dux of Czechoslovakia. Jiří Černoch (b.1924) started design work for Royal Dux in 1951, only becoming a full time employee in 1968. order He specialized in animals, but also designed female figures and athletes. This skier figurine was produced in a small number during the mid-1960s. It is very sculptural and conveys a wonderful sense of motion, with the skier descending a steep slope while turning to his left with a determined expression on his face. It measures 11 1/4” in length, following the angled slope, 7” in height to the top of his head, and 3 1/2” in width at its widest. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks or wear and he still retains his original ski poles, which is very unusual as these are almost always missing - the tip of one of the poles, however, is broken off. These are made of wood, so all that is needed is a pointed toothpick that is painted white and you would then glue it onto the tip. They are easily removable from the skier's hands, and will be wrapped separately for shipping. The figure is marked on the underside with the Royal Dux raised pink D triangle and the stamped mark “Hand Painted Made in Czechoslovakia” in blue. It is marked with the raised model number 161 and impressed with the number 5. This is a wonderful opportunity to own a piece of ceramic art - great acquisition for the skier and a wonderful decorative accent for a ski lodge!
