This Lunar Orbiter III Photo Index was lithographed by ACIC in April of 1969. From August 10, 1966 to August 1, 1967, there were five Lunar Orbiter missions. These missions were designed to provide detailed photographs of the lunar surface to facilitate the selection of landing sites for future missions, including the manned Apollo missions. Lunar Orbiter 3 was launched on February 5, 1967. In addition to its primary mission of lunar surface photography, it also carried instrumentation to detect and record micrometeoroid impacts and measure radiation, both important to the manned missions that were being planned. Entering lunar orbit on February 8, the spacecraft collected imagery between February 15 and February 23 and began transmitting data back to Earth on March 2. Unfortunately, the motor that advanced the developed film for scanning burned out on March 4, leaving about a quarter of the photographs unread. Nonetheless, 477 high resolution frames and 149 medium resolution frames were successfully transmitted. One of the photographs contained the location that was chosen for the landing site of Surveyor 1.
These lithographs were mailed by an astronomer working at Kitt Peak National Observatory to a youngster who was enthusiastic about rockets and astronomy. They were received by the youngster very shortly after the astronomer received them in 1969.
In the next few days we will be listing two more lithographs, Lunar Orbiter IV and V.
Please carefully view the photos as they are an integral part of this description.
