Monsieur Le Medicin
June 13, 1771
This fashionable French doctor comes from a set of twenty-four caricatures that Matthew and Mary Darly published in 1771.
This caricature print depicts a French doctor. He in the act of taking snuff from a large box held in one hand. Under that same arm he holds an umbrella and wears a muff around his neck, an accessory not usually carried by Englishman and often associated with the French during this period). He wears a wig with a large toupee and a huge wig bag. Other details that are meant to make him a ridiculous character include his spotted stockings, a sword (typically only carried by courtiers) and excessively large wrist ruffles. In his pocket he carries a syringe for an enema with a label reading, "Une Lavement Pour Mademoiselle Mimi."
The Darlys developed a new British print genre - small etched caricatures of single figures against plain backgrounds, their identities indicated through dress, pose and a few props. Many of these works mocked the fashionable manners of contemporary London dandies called "macaronis," and the Darly's wares soon became known as macaroni prints no matter what their subjects.

This giclée print delivers a vivid image with maximum color accuracy and exceptional resolution. The standard for museums and galleries around the world, giclée is a printing process where millions of ink droplets are “sprayed” onto high-quality paper. With the great degree of detail and smooth transitions of color gradients, giclée prints appear much more realistic than other reproduction prints. The high-quality paper is an archival acid- and lignin-free paper with an expanded color gamut, natural contrast and high ink load.
