order This is a rare and fragile antique“paper cut” from China. I believe they originate from the city of Foshan, sometimes spelled Fatshan. I have seen them described as firecracker labels or foils used in temples.
They are brightly colored- hand painted using egg tempera on gold foil. The foil has been carefully cut and embellished with tiny impressed dots. There appears to be a thin backing of mulberry paper and a stamp that says “made in China”, as well as Chinese characters. The similar items I have come across date them to the early 1900's. Beautiful!
This one has some condition issues that I have taken into consideration when pricing. I think the condition is similar to other pieces that have sold for more. There are some creasing/wrinkles at 2 places along the edge. This has resulted in some paint loss. There is a tiny bit of wear or minor paint loss in a few other places- please study photos carefully as all sales are final.
Measures approximately 6 inches across.
